You are here: The Issue Plastic in the environment

Plastic in the environment

Plastic is versatile and very cheap to produce, it’s no surprise that it’s used so much. However, once produced, it stays forever! And that’s why it doesn’t belong in our environment. Here you can read more about the environmental impact of plastic:

Plastic production and decomposition

Plastic production keeps growing at a fast pace. But plastic is non-biodegradable and does not decompose. So what happens to it in the oceans?

Ghost nets

Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned in the oceans. Marine animals like turtles and dolphins get entangled in them and die.

Plastic breakdown

Plastic breaks down into millions of tiny plastic particles, but never fully disappears. Learn more about the plastic break down process and its dangers.

Microplastics pollution

Microplastics pollution comes from plastic breaking down into millions of pieces. Microplastics end up in the ocean via drains or through other routes and cannot ever be cleaned up.
