Horticulture

You are here: What we do Other projects Horticulture

A tray for the future

In 2015, we ran the first-ever campaign in the horticulture sector against single-use plastic plant trays. Sustainable alternatives have become available since, which means that millions of kg of plastic could be saved every year. However,  the profits made at every step of the production chain are big, and there is little sense of responsibility. With this in mind, we brought the issue to the Dutch Parliament in 2016, successfully putting it on the political agenda (Kamervragen). But even after a powerful report on the most sustainable multi-use tray, Royal Flora Holland showed no intention of stopping the use of the disposable plastic Normpack Tray.

The Plastic Soup Foundation, however,  will continue to push for innovation and new policy with the support of our partners, the Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the Duurzame Bloemistengroep. We are currently approaching companies and organizations to help us assess the amount of disposable plastic that is generated throughout the horticulture industry. Fortunately, an increasing number of companies in this sector are trying to reduce the enormous quantities of single-use plastic. The sooner influential companies like Royal Flora Holland take steps in this direction, the better.
